Wedding Checklist

12-24 (or more) before the wedding: 

  • Decide on the style and color scheme of your wedding
  • Decide on the type of wedding, i.e. formal, informal, themed
  • Plan out your budget
  • Prepare your guest list with complete addresses and other contact information.
  • Make reservations for the ceremony and reception.  The best places go fast.
  • Order the wedding gown, veil and accessories.
  • Order and send save-the-date cards

6-24 months before the wedding:

  • Send out engagement announcement to newspapers
  • Select your attendants
  • Order attendants' gowns and accessories
  • Order mothers' dresses.
  • Schedule meeting with officiant
  • Schedule meeting with coordinator for ceremony and reception sites
  • Select caterer
  • Select organist/musicians
  • Select vocalists
  • Select florist
  • Select photographer
  • Order wedding cake
  • Make reservations for the rehearsal dinner site
  • Sign up for gift registries
  • Plan your honeymoon

3-6 months before the wedding:

  • Reserve tuxedos
  • Make medical appointments
  • Order wedding invitations, thank-you-notes and other special stationery
  • Choose the rings
  • Order transportation for the wedding party 

2-3 months before the wedding

  • Address invitations
  • Finalize arrangements for officiant, wedding sites, caterer, florist, photographer, wedding cake, organist, rehearsal dinner, honeymoon and other pre-arranged functions
  • Schedule bridesmaids' luncheon and groomsmen party
  • Schedule final dress fitting
  • Check on marriage license requirements
  • Pick up rings

4-6 weeks before wedding

  • Mail invitations
  • Pick up wedding dress
  • Make hairdresser and  makeup appointment
  • Schedule final fittings for attendants, mothers and pick up when ready.
  • Write thank-you-notes
  • Purchase wedding album
  • Purchase guest book
  • Purchase cake knife
  • Purchase cake server
  • Purchase ring pillow
  • Purchase garters
  • Purchase bridal party attendant gifts
  • Purchase gifts for each other
  • Purchase flower girl basket
  • Purchase any other items you will need

2-4 weeks before the wedding:

  • Have formal wedding portrait taken
  • Send wedding announcement to newspapers
  • Double check all contracted services
  • Pick up marriage license

7-10 days before the wedding:

  • Telephone those who have not responded to the invitation
  • Give the caterer the final guest count
  • Pack for the honeymoon
  • Arrange for church rehearsal , researsal dinner and confirm reservations.
  • Hold bridesmaids' luncheon, groomsmen's party and present their gifts.

The day before the wedding:

  • Pick up tuxedos
  • Hold wedding rehearsal
  • Give rehearsal dinner

The wedding day:

  • Have your makeup and hair done
  • Arrive at the wedding site at least a half-hour before the start of the ceremony
  • Make sure you have the rings
  • Make sure you have the officiant's fee
  • Make sure you have the marriage license
  • Make sure you have traveler's checks, airline tickets and luggage
  • Make sure you have something old, something new, something borrowed, something blue

After the wedding:

  • Change name on driver's license, social security card, bank accounts, etc.
  • Send out thank-you-notes
  • Make address changes
  • Change insurance beneficiaries
  • Clean your wedding gown and store
  • Set up meeting with photographer to view proofs

These suggestions are only the few items to keep you on track.  Planning a wedding is a huge undertaking.  Keep good records and plan your event well.
